Our Story

A Foundation in Response

In 1988, the Centre de Solidarité (CDS) was established to respond to a growing national need: structured support for individuals facing substance use disorder in Mauritius.

Built on the principles of Projet Homme — a therapeutic philosophy rooted in dignity, structure, and social reintegration — CDS became a place for sustained recovery, not short-term relief.

A Distinct Approach

CDS has always been a therapeutic community. Here, recovery is not just about abstinence. It is about rebuilding daily rhythms, developing responsibility, practicing mutual support, and preparing for life beyond the Centre

Still Standing,
Still Serving

Over the decades, CDS has adapted without compromising the foundations that make it effective. Today, it remains a point of reference in Mauritius for therapeutic recovery and reintegration — recognised by hospitals, courts, social services, and families.

Part of the National Response

CDS works in close coordination with the Ministry of Health and Wellness, the judiciary, referral hospitals, and civil society organisations. We are part of the national effort to respond to substance use disorder with structure, continuity, and care.

Our Method

Therapeutic Community Model

CDS is structured around the Therapeutic Community (TC) model — a model where recovery is lived within the daily practice of structure, peer support, and shared responsibility. In the TC model, community is not a backdrop — it is the method. Individuals (day care and residential) and our CDS team members together maintain a rhythm that supports change.

Therapeutic Community Belief System

Daily Life at CDS

The day at CDS follows a clear structure:

  • Morning Circles:
    shared check-ins and intentions
  • Duties and Roles:
each resident participates in daily maintenance of the space
  • Group Therapy and Peer Feedback:
    moments for reflection and communication
  • Time for Reflection:
space to pause and engage with the process

Every element is intentional — building rhythm, reinforcing responsibility, and helping residents replace chaos with structure.

Phased Progression

Residents move through clearly defined stages, each one offering more autonomy and more responsibility. Nothing is rushed. Every step is earned — through effort, reflection, and participation in community life.

Our Guiding Philosophy

Remettre l’Homme Debout

Projet Homme is a humanist philosophy that sees the person — not just the diagnosis. It understands substance use disorder as the outcome of a complex interplay of trauma, context, and survival. Rather than punish or label, it offers a path to rebuild — through education, responsibility, and community.

At CDS, this philosophy is not theoretical. It is lived. It is carried through daily rituals, reinforced by the team, and shared from one resident to the next — one step, one day, one interaction at a time.
